Employing the Behavior Cycle. I advocate for employing the behavior cycle to improve change sustainment. Nowhere have I seen the behavior cycle in action more than with our current health crisis.
- The cycle starts with identifying critical behaviors. COVID-19 behaviors have been identified as hand hygiene, social distancing, shelter in place and use of protective masks and gloves.
- Next, critical behaviors need to be triggered or prompted. COVID-19 behaviors have been triggered by the need to stop the spread and flatten the curve.
- Much of the world population has engaged in the behaviors.
- Lastly, once the behavior occurs it will continue or stop based on how it is reinforced. This is the most critical behavior cycle step.
As a result of engaging in the critical behaviors, we are seeing a reduction in new cases and hospitalizations and the opening of some areas. This is the positive reinforcement for our behaviors. Although the news on COVID-19 is encouraging, we will need to continue to practice the critical behaviors in order to contain the virus. As change practitioners we are skilled at driving organizational change. Our challenge now is how can we trigger, action and reinforce the COVID-19 behaviors as part of our work? This health crisis is the largest change initiative we have ever been involved with so let’s get to work using our knowledge of how behavior (trigger, action behavior and reinforce) and change works! How will you “trigger, action behavior, and respond” to this challenge?
