Work-from-home – adjusting to the current norm. It is very interesting to watch how we all react to this unexpected change as we learn to work-from-home (WFH). As a long-time WFHer, I’m lucky in that I already utilize best practices, have an optimized physical space set-up, and am well-tuned to the professional mores required. But, suddenly, I am interacting with everyone in this fashion, many of whom are only equipped to WFH at a basic level.  Many have very little WFH experience.  They are learning and adopting their own practices, on the fly.

I have clients who are virtual from their basement, laptop stacked on a makeshift desk of boxes, spouses using the 'dining room office', the kids home-schooling in the living room, bedrooms and hallways, with the pets navigating their own big change to their normally quiet and sparsely populated daytime environment. So, life often interrupts our agendas in this new, forced we-all-work-from-home situation. And that’s ALL RIGHT. I’ve noticed increased empathy for our fellow shelter-in-placers. A sense of grace and relaxed understanding regarding norms and deadline. The development of mutual understanding that first, ask how everyone is and do what we can to ensure that they and their families are taken care of; second, it's OK to let your emotions come through; and, third, we can make real connection over distance by taking the time and concern to care and talk. I’m very hopeful when considering – Will this intercourse continue as our new normal after the crisis is past?
