Why did you decide to pursue the CCMP?

As government regulations and the pace of technology changes continues to accelerate, change is an ever critical but often overlooked constant to business success. Over my career, I have witnessed the failure of countless operational and project initiatives to achieve their intended goals because of a lack of focus on change management. In fact, when projects fall behind schedule or budgets get stretched, generally it is training and change management that are most often targeted with budget cuts or accelerated delivery schedules, often with negative consequences to benefits realization.

So many critical business functions, such as accounting, credit, logistics, IT, projects, business analysis, business process, strategic planning, taxation, payroll, and HR have specific professional designation programs geared to providing the necessary training to achieve success, and to demonstrate professional capacity. Change management can now take its place at the table with the CCMP designation. For me, the CCMP was a natural extension of my existing qualifications in management consulting and project management. This will further improve the level of service and commitment that I am able to deliver to my clients.

How did you prepare for the CCMP?

Reading The Standard for Change Management was the critical backbone of study as well as downloading numerous papers and several documents from the internet to see how different companies refined these methodologies and put them into practice. Lastly, I spent time reading over the ACMP Code of Ethics. I allowed myself a 5-week window from the date that I committed to write my exam, and then set specific targets of materials that I wanted to cover in the allotted study periods and kept to that schedule. I passed the exam on the first attempt.

How has earning the CCMP benefited you personally and professionally?

I do not believe that I have yet seen anywhere close to the full benefits of attaining the CCMP personally or professionally. More and more project management contract postings are now specifically referencing change management as must have skills. Some postings for project, program, transformation, or change management positions are now beginning to reference the CCMP or the ACMP. Having the CCMP now gives me the confidence to know that I can increase the level of service and commitment that I am able to deliver to my clients. At the same time, having the CCMP designation demonstrates to my clients that I have achieved the necessary credibility to deliver those services in a professional and ethical manner.
