Title: Leading Change in Healthcare: How We Built Individual and Collective Change Capability to Survive and Thrive through the COVID-19 Crisis, and Beyond

As Warren Buffet said, “it’s only when the tide goes out that you learn who’s been swimming naked!” By proactively building an enabling foundation and common language to lead change up, down, and across the system, University Hospitals of Ohio set itself up for success in weathering the COVID-19 crisis far more effectively than many healthcare systems, emerging stronger than before. Join us to learn how UH built change leadership (not merely “change management”) capabilities. We’ll explore how we trained over 1,500 leaders-at-all-levels, helped the leaders leverage their learnings on-the-job, and are reinforcing for sustainment. We will share results, which range from leading through the COVID-19 crisis, to measurable progress on specific change initiatives, to furthering the mission of the organization by improvements in patient satisfaction, to fostering a more agile and collaborative culture. Attendees will learn how to complement and extend their current focus on “managing change” and “developing leaders” by adding the missing ingredient – that is, concerted focus on “leading change” and “developing change-capable leaders.” Moreover, they will discover how “learning to lead change” promotes not only more effective change outcomes, but also facilitates the achievement of bottom-line business goals and organizational mission/values. Actions taken and lessons learned are broadly applicable across industries.

Barbara A. Trautlein, PhD is author of Change Intelligence and originator of the CQ® System. Thirty years ago she founded Change Catalysts, LLC, an approved Qualified Education Provider by the ACMP. Barbara partners with client organizations to facilitate successful and sustainable change, and coaches and certifies change agents - achieving bottom-line business and powerful leadership results for clients. She was honored as the Change Management Consultant of the Year in 2015 by the ACMP-Midwest Chapter. Her blend of research and real-world expertise makes her an in-demand speaker at conferences around the world. Barbara has a unique ability to connect with her audiences across industries, from steel mills to sales teams, refineries to retail outlets, and healthcare to high tech. She holds a doctorate in Organizational Psychology from the University of Michigan. Clients served include Abbott Laboratories, Cisco, Deloitte, Exelon, Northwestern University, and University Hospitals.

Mitzi Vazquez-Long, Manager, Organizational Development & Learning at University Hospitals is a results-oriented leader with the ability to implement strategies that support change efforts, organizational goals and objectives. She has extensive experience in Organizational Development (OD) consulting, project design, training and development, and talent management. She as a Master of Science degree in Positive Organization Development and Change from Case Western Reserve University’s Weatherhead School of Management, a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology with a concentration in Criminology from Cleveland State University, and holds certifications in various leadership development tools and assessments. Mitzi primarily focuses on leading the UH Organizational Development and Learning efforts which enable UH to achieve its strategies and business goals. Areas of focus include aligning the development and implementation of HR programs and process for critical human capital initiatives, performance training, change management, talent development and retention.
