Title: Using Emotional Intelligence to Identify and Address Resistance

Every change leader knows that dealing with resistance is a critical component of change. Is there a magic sauce for identifying and addressing resistance? It’s not magic, but one tool that can be used is emotional intelligence. By using emotional intelligence as a tool, a change leader can better identify and address expected and unexpected areas of resistance. Using real examples from organizational change initiatives, this session will discuss the importance of using emotional intelligence principles and tools in a change effort. Participants will learn the benefit of adding emotional intelligence to their stakeholder analysis. In a small group, participants will be able to apply emotional intelligence principles to some of their own questions. The session will use examples of responses that can help identify resistors and learn how to specify the “What’s In It For Me” based on motive and reflection responses. Participants will be given an example of some responses received and will be asked to define strategies to address resistance. Additionally, the session will discuss strategies that can help break down resistance including real examples of what was done on previous change initiatives.

Adele Lynn founded Lynn Leadership Group, an international consulting, coaching and training firm focused on helping individuals and organizations change to become more productive through applying emotional intelligence. Her work on emotional intelligence is offered through intellectual property partners throughout the world. Adele is the author of 7 books published in 15 languages. Her book, The EQ Interview has been featured as the cover story for Harvard Management Update, endorsed by SHRM, and praised by publisher’s Weekly. She has also authored two e-learning programs including, Mentoring: Passing on the Torch that won the Athena Award for Excellence in Mentoring. She has written three books for trainers and coaches which have consistently been acclaimed in training and development publications. The newest release is, Emotional Intelligence Activity Kit, which was praised by TD Magazine as, “a handy guide to help employees build EQ, from entry levels right up to the C-suite.”

Janele Lynn is the owner of Lynn Leadership Group and is a certified change management professional. She provides intellectual property and support on emotional intelligence, mentoring and workplace trust to strategic partners throughout North America, South America, Europe, and Asia. She develops product lines, as well as delivers training and facilitation services. She has provided her expertise in emotional intelligence, organizational change, and mentoring to clients such as Ellwood Mill Products, EGI, JM Family, Adelphoi, Bechtel Bettis, Hansgrohe, Lockheed Martin, Crossroads Programs, Texas Children’s Hospital and DDI. She is the author of The Emotional Intelligence Activity Kit. She has previously worked for IBM and also for Transformation Advisors as a Human Resources professional and acquisition specialist. Janele has done research focused on defining and measuring tangible linkages between supply chain implementations and financial gains.
