Title: How to use a visual model for scoping change to enhance stakeholder readiness and reduce change design risk

Presenter: Louise Harris

Skill Level: Intermediate (3-5 Years of Change Management Experience)

Track: Trends & Innovation

Have you experienced putting considerable time and resources into drafting lengthy change strategy documents and then it is like pulling teeth to get thoughtful feedback from relevant stakeholders. No wonder so many change initiative leaders want to skip the strategy effort and pain and jump straight to the plan. But, what if we took a different approach? Could we articulate a change strategy in a short series of one-page visual models that are quick and easy to understand and take much less effort to gain valuable feedback? Experiments with clients since 2010 have led to my current PhD research and have demonstrated a resounding yes. Designing and using visual models, which leverage recent research in visual cognition, resulted in increased stakeholder engagement and early buy in and consequently more informed and useful feedback. In this session I will take you through the process of developing a visual model to define an envisioned scope of change based on a real-life change initiative in a hospital. I will also describe the change management and change design results achieved and the principles derived from the live research study.
