Title: Bust your “But”:  Build a Change-Capable Organization through Your Everyday Work

Are your sights set on building a more change-capable organization, but you keep running into the capability “buts”? I want to build change capability… but my organization isn’t ready. But I don’t have a sponsor. But I’m not sure where to start. But my day-to-day work is already more than a full time job. Building capability doesn’t have to mean doing more or new things, but rather extending what you already do with the intention of capability. You can amplify your everyday work with the ultimate goal, and ultimate result, of organizational change capability. With this focus, every step, every activity, and every interaction can be a capability catalyst. In this interactive session, we will reframe your day-to-day change activities into “capability catalysts” and identify your daily opportunities to influence change maturity. We’ll explore five categories of capability strategy—leadership, project, skill, structure, and process—and see examples from real organizations’ strategies in each category. You will create a plan that extends your current work and includes a first micro-step, a mid-range goal, and a long-term vision for each category. You will walk away with renewed focus and energy for making each step count and an immediately-actionable plan to catalyze capability.


Susie Patterson combines years of helping private and public sector organizations develop their change management capabilities with a deep knowledge of Prosci’s best practices research and approach. She has experience leading sales, operational, and product development organizations. Her change management experience includes training and partnering with clients implementing change management capability. Susie now currently Prosci’s new development portfolio with a goal of equipping leaders, practitioners, and change agents with the most effective skills and tools to optimize their change results. She is passionate about breaking large, complex, or ambiguous concepts into actionable tactics and encouraging change practitioners as they strive to develop themselves and their organizations.   Susie has a BA in Economics and Minor in Leadership and Civic Engagement from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. She lives in Colorado with her husband.

Learning Objectives:

  • Participants will identify ways to extend their daily change management work to increase organizational change maturity
  • Drawing on best practices and others’ experience, participants will create a capability plan including tactics in leadership, project, process, skill, and structure
  • Participants will develop five specific next steps they can take immediately to create a more change capable organization
