As change managers, we often rely on a compelling WIIFM (what's in it for me) to help employees transition through change. Some hard changes, however, carry no personal WIIFM. How do we get employees on board when there is no personal benefit to them? This session goes "back to the basics" with a unique look at the elements of ADKAR applied to hard changes, with specific emphasis on the levers that change managers can use to successfully manage change without the benefit of a WIIFM. These levers will be applied to a real example of employee layoffs to demonstrate how they can be used to the greatest effectiveness. In this session, participants will apply these techniques to a case study in small groups, and will leave the session with an infographic detailing the information presented and a published case study leveraging the session's approach, “Engaging the Survivors After a Layoff.


Wendy Hallmark is a Senior Director at Alvarez & Marsal Business Consulting and leader of the firm's Organizational Change Management practice. With 20 years of change management experience in consulting and industry, Ms. Hallmark helps clients improve performance by leading transformational change initiatives, teaching change management certification classes, and coaching executives on how to successfully lead in periods of complex change. Ms. Hallmark has worked in a variety of industries including oil and gas, waste management and recycling, procurement management, foodservice, retail and financial services. Her experience focuses on management strategy, organizational change management, and organizational capability, development and design. Prior to joining Alvarez & Marsal, Ms. Hallmark held leadership positions with Chevron Corporation, Sysco Corporation and McKinsey & Company. Ms. Hallmark holds a BBA from the University of Texas at Austin and an MBA from the Kellogg Graduate School of Management, Northwestern University. Publications include "Leading Transformational Change - Start by Thinking like a Marketer" (ACMP Global Reference Library, 2015). Ms. Hallmark is a past ACMP Global Conference speaker, Prosci-certified Advanced Instructor and member of the Board of Directors of the ACMP Texas chapter.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand that a WIIFM is neither always available, nor required to help employees transition through hard changes
  • Take a “back to the basics” approach to rethink the components of ADKAR, and understand how levers can be used to successfully drive change without the benefit of a WIIFM
  • Become familiar with this approach through the use of a real-life example (employee layoffs)
  • Demonstrate how change managers can use these levers to help people engage in hard change through a group (table) case study
